A Day of Learning: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging

02/23/24

Action for Children’s Professional Development team recently hosted a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion event that brought together educators and administrators, all committed to creating inclusive and fair spaces for our youngest learners. The conference focused on sparking meaningful conversations and inspiring action in early childhood education.

One of the amazing speakers, Dr. Zeynep Isik-Ercan, kicked things off with a keynote titled “A Framework for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging: The Child in the Community.” She emphasized the importance of recognizing our shared humanity in building inclusive environments and offered valuable guidance on fostering a sense of belonging for every child.

Throughout the day, attendees participated in sessions covering various aspects of DEIB in early childhood education, from gender equity to supporting children with autism spectrum disorder. Each session provided practical insights and strategies for educators to apply in their classrooms.

For more practical tips, check out our recent blog post, Classrooms That Embrace All Learners: Gender Equity.

One session stood out for its focus on navigating challenging conversations with families and colleagues. Participants gained tools and confidence to address sensitive issues with empathy and constructive dialogue, strengthening relationships and creating a sense of community.

In short, this virtual DEIB conference for early childhood professionals was both inspiring and motivating. By facilitating dialogue, sharing insights, and offering practical tools, it empowered attendees to create nurturing environments where every child feels valued and respected.  We’re excited to continue our efforts in creating equity and belonging in the classroom, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
